Safety

Every Child deserves a safe space to learn and grow; and every family deserves to know their students are safe at school.

School safety is a complicated and complex issue today; it requires a multilateral and multifaceted approach. Colorado schools must work with health professionals, especially those providing mental health services to support all students. I support Community Schools, which provide wrap around services for all families, and facilitated access to the services they may need. Reflective systems of discipline and justice provide calm, objective ways to address student and classroom needs.

For far too many students, school is the only safe place they know - housing insecurity, food insecurity, family and income insecurities are much too real staples in students’ lives. While we cannot be all things to all people, schools and educators must have the resources to support the students we see in our classrooms.

Public education must always strive to serve the changing needs of our students so that learning is accessible and equitable, especially for those students who have been marginalized for so long.
